‘WORLD STARS’ SET TO RETURN AT THE BRITISH OPEN
World Champion Sarah Stevenson, together with fellow British medallists Jade Jones, Michael Harvey and Martin Stamper are set to return to competitive action at the British Open later this year.
The quartet, who last month delivered Britain’s best ever showing at a World Championships, are expected to part of a strong British line-up when the event returns to Manchester’s Sportcity on 1-2 October.
As tickets for the event went on open sale today, GB Taekwondo Performance Director, Gary Hall, said: “our athletes have had their well earned breaks following the Worlds and are now back into their full training programme.
“We are travelling back out to Korea next month for a training camp and our plan is to have a strong team in place for our home event, the British Open, in October.
“It’s an important competition for us as we enter the home straight in our planning for London 2012 and equally, it’s a great chance for fans of the GB team to come and see our athletes up close and on home soil against some of the world’s best fighters.”
British athletes from the GB Taekwondo Academy, as well as from leading clubs around the UK, are expected to face a stern test from what is expected to be a high-class international field. With valuable ranking points up for grabs, the Open is expected to attract teams from some of the sport’s leading nations including Korea, China, Iran and Russia.
Tickets for the British Open have now gone on public sale with daily or weekend tickets available. Early birds can ensure they reserve the very best seats by booking online at Ticketmaster or by visiting the British Taekwondo website, www.britishtaekwondo.org.uk.
The British Open is supported by UK Sport, Manchester City Council and KPMG.
