2020 Junior World Championships Cancelled

11th August 2020

Due to current circumstances, World Taekwondo has decided to cancel the upcoming Junior World Championships in order to protect the health & wellbeing of all participants.

As safety remains the number one priority, Sofia will instead be playing host in the 2022 edition of the event.

There is no doubt that our young and budding athletes were looking forward to competing at a major milestone during their junior careers but here at GB Taekwondo, we encourage everyone to regroup, refocus and proceed with what still lies ahead during these uncertain times.

Please note, that although this may seem like a setback, international athletes will be in a similar position and it is important to concentrate on each step at a time.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said: “It is with great disappointment that we will not be able to host the World Taekwondo Junior Championships in Sofia this year and we are sorry for all those young athletes who have been training so hard for this competition.

“However, we have always been very clear that the health of our World Taekwondo family must come first. After a thorough discussion with all relevant parties, including medical experts, we agreed it would not be safe to go ahead with the Championships this year as planned. We have no doubt that Sofia will host a fantastic event in 2022.”

GB Taekwondo Development Manager Steve Green added: “For a number of the team this will have been their last major event as a junior as well as a key opportunity for ranking points.

“Naturally, athlete welfare remains at the forefront of what we do at GB Taekwondo, therefore we understand and support the decision of the WT.  Furthermore, we respect that we will each process this news in different ways.

“Looking beyond this Championships and its’ cancellation it need not define us nor where we go from here.  I urge our athletes to channel their disappointment into the proactive steps that they will now take toward their journey as a future World Class athlete.”
