Bianca Walkden Sets Sights On Rio Olympics Qualification In Manchester

Taekwondo world champion Bianca Walkden plans to make the most of a rare opportunity to compete close to home and take a big step to sealing Rio 2016 qualification in Manchester next month.

The Liverpool 24-year-old is part of a 16-strong Great Britain squad for the Manchester Grand Prix, which takes place between October 16 and 18 and carries crucial qualifying points for the Olympic Games.

Despite claiming world gold in Chelyabinsk in May, Walkden is still battling to claim a top six world ranking which would guarantee her place in Rio after missing the whole of the 2014 season due to injury.

But a local crowd and the prospect of booking her place on the plane to Rio alongside flat-mate and reigning Olympic champion Jade Jones – who has already qualified for Brazil – is spurring Walkden on.
