Fighting Chance Graduates to Join GB Academy

Great Britain’s world class performance programme will be welcoming three new recruits from this year’s Fighting Chance initiative.

Rebecca Mcgowan and Jack Spall will join the GB Taekwondo junior squad and start training in the immediate future, not to mention Rebecca has also been selected to compete in the upcoming Junior European Championships in Latvia from 22-26 October 2015, in the -68kg division.

As for -80kg Ryan Marlow, who hails from a kickboxing background, he has been chosen for the fulltime programme at the GB Academy.

The newcomer will be training alongside the likes of Olympic and European Games Bronze medallist, Lutalo Muhammad, as well as recent World Championship’s Silver medallist, Damon Sansum – who also made it onto the team via the UK Sport backed, Fighting Chance campaign.

No stranger to combat sports, the Telford based athlete boasts an impressive fighting resume as he has previously won the Wako World Championships four times along with the Wako Europeans twice.

Upon receiving the exciting news, Ryan said: “I feel honoured and proud to be picked from so many aspiring and talented athletes.”

He continued, “Fighting chance is a fantastic programme which allows all athletes from various backgrounds to show their full potential. It gives everyone an equal chance to be selected.”

Equally as remarkable, Scottish Rebecca is a fluent WTF fighter who has achieved gold medals in her previous six competitions – the Dutch, Spanish and Austrian Opens to name a few; whilst Norwich-born team-mate, Jack, is the current Welsh heavyweight sparring champion in the TAGB style of fighting.

We wish the trio nothing but the best of luck at the Academy for 2015 and beyond.
