GIBSON GOING FOR EURO GLORY
Niall Gibson is looking for his own taste of European glory this week as he heads to Athens for the ETU Under 21 European Championships.
Having seen the GB senior team take seven medals in Manchester last month, Niall, Britain’s sole representative at the event, is looking to bring another medal back to Scorpion Taekwondo in Doncaster to match the recent performance of club-mate Caroline Fisher.
Niall, a former Commonwealth Championships silver medallist spoke earlier this week before departing for Greece.
“I’m looking to do my very best and it would be great to come home with a medal, preferably gold but I think it will be a good opportunity to get some more experience.
“I’ve already competed against some of the competitors in my category and I’m used to how some of them fight. Hopefully that will be to my advantage.”
Niall will be coached by Scorpion’s Pete Adamsons. “Pete’s coached me for a while now and we’ve developed a strong understanding. I also train regularly with Caroline Fisher as well and she’s been helping me prepare.
“I’ll be getting to Athens early, to acclimatise and to get used to the venue. It’ll be 35 degrees over there! And then my sister will be coming out at the weekend to support me.”
Niall competes in the -58kg competition this Sunday (17 June) which just happens to be his 19th birthday. We’ll all be wishing Niall the best of luck and hope that he can celebrate in style.
