All For One And One For All As GB Taekwondo Prospects Head To France

Josh Calland and Max Cater

Britain’s four teenage musketeers will be en-garde for action at the French Open this weekend hoping to prove ‘Project 58’ is on the march forward.

Recent Croatian Open bronze medallist, Max Cater, Josh Calland, Feyi Pearce and Archie Waldock are part of a 10-strong, male only squad heading for Paris.

They all hope to impress GB Taekwondo Performance Director, Gary Hall in the -58kg weight division category and gain valuable ranking points to take into 2016.

“Project 58 is a huge category we are investing in and we have four really exceptional young lads in there all looking to make a mark,” confirmed Hall.

“Part of our investment process is to create depth and competition in each of the Olympic weight categories and we have got that for the first time now in -58kg.

“Max has made an early start but Josh is doing really well too, Archie has just stepped up to the Seniors and for Feyi it is a really good opportunity to get a run out and show what he can do.

“But for all the team we are looking for performances and for some early ranking points entering an important selection year in 2016,” added Hall.

“Apart from the Rio Olympics, we have the European Championships in May. So,  some of the performances that will happen this weekend and in the next couple of months will be important towards selecting a team for the Euros.

“And it’s about players in the development squad trying to breakthrough and show some implementation of what they have been picking up in training.”

Britain’s medallists from last month’s WTF World Grand Prix in Manchester, Jade Jones, Bianca Walkden and Lutalo Muhammad are excused duty while preparing for next month’s Grand Prix series finals in Mexico.

But for 2011 World Championship medallists, Michael Harvey and Martin Stamper, the French Open provides an opportunity to prove themselves at -68kg while Levi Goodridge and Lyle Walker fight at -80kg and +80kg respectively.
