ABOUT AMY

Para Taekwondo fighter, Amy Truesdale has had quite the impressive medal tally over the years and is best known for her World Championship wins in 2014 and 2017.

The Chester-born athlete was initially encouraged to take up the martial art by her dad for self-defence alongside her sister, Chloe.

Before receiving National Lottery funding and joining the World Class Performance Programme full time, Truesdale had a brief stint in retail and was also a coach in the TAGB style of the sport.

Truesdale’s primary aim is to get selected to represent GB at the upcoming Games in Tokyo 2020.

She is also a keen advocate for disability sport and has made it her mission to raise awareness.

60 SECOND INTERVIEW

WHEN DID YOU START TAEKWONDO AND WHY:
I started the TAGB style of the sport in 1997 because my parents wanted my sister and me to have some form of self-defence.

OTHER SPORTS PLAYED:
I used to do ballet dancing, tap dancing, swimming and taekwondo – all at the same time.
I eventually chose taekwondo because there was no contest.

AMBITION:
To win gold at Para Taekwondo’s debut at Tokyo in 2020 and then hopefully do the same in Paris in 2024.

ROLE MODEL/FAVOURITE OTHER SPORTSMAN OR WOMAN:
Richard Whitehead

WHY SHOULD THE PUBLIC WATCH TAEKWONDO IN YOUR OPINION:
Sport in general shows that ordinary people are able to achieve anything they put their mind to, Taekwondo, in particular, is really versatile and it’s fun to watch.
From a Paralympic perspective, it’s good to show that it’s people’s ability not disability that matters.

IF SOMEONE GAVE YOU £1 MILLION, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT:
I’d probably give half to my parents along with my sister and nephew. That’d leave me with enough to get a good holiday in or a new car. I’d like to make sure everyone else is sorted out first.

SOMETHING YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT AMY TRUESDALE:
I’m an ambassador for a charity which works with war veterans.
