GB Taekwondo Strengthens Board with Key Appointment on Trail to Tokyo

1st November 2018

GB Taekwondo is delighted to announce the appointment of solicitor and keen martial arts exponent, Ian Gillis, as an Independent Non-Executive Director.

His appointment is aimed at ensuring GB Taekwondo remains at the forefront of good governance whilst strengthening its commercial activities.

A former National karate champion, Ian will serve for an initial four-year term with an option to serve two terms.

He is currently a corporate partner at international law firm Hill Dickinson LLP and has served on the Hill Dickinson LLP board between 2014 and 2018.

Ian’s field of expertise covers initial public offerings on the AIM market and the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange, public takeovers, mergers and acquisitions, disposals and corporate governance.

He is recognised as a leading corporate lawyer in Legal 500 and one of the most highly regarded public company lawyers outside of London in Chambers.

Away from the boardroom Ian has practiced martial arts since an early age holding a 5th Dan black belt in Shotokan Karate.

In his competition days, Ian was a member of the English Shotokan Academy National Team and a one-time National title holder.

Julia Newton, chair of GB Taekwondo, said: “While we were delighted to have attracted so many strong candidates in our recent round of Board recruitment, Ian has a unique set of skills.

“As Hill Dickinson’s Head of Capital Markets and Corporate Governance, he brings two strands of expertise which will allow us to continue to help raise the bar for outstanding governance in sport, and to help us attract commercial income at a hugely competitive time.

“Blending sporting and business expertise has been a key ingredient in GB Taekwondo’s successful journey from Olympic inclusion to Rio 2016.

“Ian’s appointment allows us to continue and build on that tradition.” added Julia.
