Gold For Walthamstow Warrior

Lutalo Muhammad (2)

London 2012 bronze medallist, Lutalo Muhammad has won gold tonight in the -80kg division of the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Final in Mexico City and has therefore secured a -80kg quota place at Rio 2016 for GB next summer.

The determined 24-year-old set his sights on being 1st place after gaining a silver medal on home soil in October. The day began with a tough bout against Germany’s Tahir Guelec – who is ranked 6 in the world. The pair found themselves battling it out during a golden point round and as neither were able to score the all-important point, the winner was decided on impact.

The odds were in Muhammad’s favour and he went onto face Russian Albert Gaun (2nd rank) in the Semi-Final. The London-based fighter ended his 3rd round with an even playing field once again (2-2) and entered the golden point round, yet this time he was able to score first.

With a medal secured for GB, Muhammad began his intense final against Aaron Cook of Moldova (1st rank) and with his sights set on gold, he ended the 1st round in the lead 3-1.

Muhammad then ensured he remained ahead and scored a further 2 points (5-1) before the 2nd round was over.

As for the 3rd and final round, Cook attempted to catch up but was unable to do so and Muhammad finished in 1st place with 7-3.
