Jade Jones and Lauren Williams kept the honours coming for taekwondo at the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year awards with a double triumph in Cardiff.

Flint raised Jones, the double Olympic Games gold medallist, was voted Sports Personality of the Year.

The 23-year-old won a public vote to succeed rugby union’s 2015 winner Dan Biggar relegating Real Madrid and Wales football star, Gareth Bale into second place.

And Williams, 17, from Newport, collected the Carwyn James award for the Young Sportswoman of the Year after 12 months when she became Senior European champion for the first time and retained her Junior World crown.

Now, Jones will attempt to end 2016 with victory this weekend at the World Taekwondo Grand Prix final in Azerbaijan.

“There were so many big names and Wales had such a big year, I just can’t describe the feeling,” smiled Jones after being crowned.

“I was just a naughty and cheeky eight-year-old when I started (taekwondo) and went to my local club to burn off energy. Now I am here!

“It’s amazing to see how many kids are doing taekwondo and coming through,” said Rio 2016 and London 2012 champion.

“I face timed my friend who was in the pub in Flint (during the Games) and it was just bonkers to see them all supporting me. It does really mean so much.

“Next year it is the World Championships next year so it will be amazing if I can tick that off my list.”

Teenager Williams said: “At the start of the year I would never have expected to have achieved everything I have done. It’s just been a whirlwind.

“But it’s massively motivating to train alongside an elite athlete like Jade.”
