Haider Hoping to have Lux of a Champion

16th June 2018

Hassan Haider looks to further his taekwondo education as part of a youthful GB Taekwondo squad at the Luxembourg Open this weekend.

The 20-year-old Scot has received plenty of mat action this year and is keen to keep on improving.

“I’ve had a lot of tournaments recently and there’s been some ups and downs,” agrees the Falkirk fighter who has contested both the World and European Championships in the past 12 months.

“I’ve learnt some valuable things from fighting some of the best fighters in the world. And that has had a huge impact on my game,” agreed -58kg contender Haider, one of 9 British competitors in Luxembourg.

“So, I’m excited to get into the ring again and try to implement what I’ve been working on. I feel like I can go all the way this time.

“The biggest difference since coming into the Academy has been finding my identity as a taekwondo fighter.

“I need to put my stamp on the mats which will give the best chance of reaching the top.”

Also keen to impress is double Olympic Games medallist, Lutalo Muhammad.

The London born star has finished runner-up in both of his tournament appearances so far and keen to make it third time lucky at -87kg.

Peter Longobardi-Radford is also back in action, a week after becoming the first Briton to win a gold medal at the World Taekwondo Europe Open Multi Games in Bulgaria

The 2018 European Championship bronze medallist fights alongside Yorkshire duo, Bradly Sinden and Jacob Barnett at -68kg.

The women’s team includes Scottish teenager, Jordyn Smith, who has already enjoyed a memorable year, capturing the Junior World Championship title and bronze at the Senior European Championships.
