Jade Jones capped the best year of her medal laden career in Azerbaijan tonight by winning another top accolade.

Twenty-four hours after becoming WTF World Grand Prix overall champion, Jones was voted Female Athlete of the Year by the World Taekwondo Federation.

The 23-year-old double Olympic Games champion from Flint started her week by winning the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year honour in Cardiff.

She flew to Baku and in her first competition since Rio 2016, Jones defeated Egypt’s Hedaya Malak to take the WGP -57kg division title.

In doing so the reigning European champion and European Games gold medallist ended 2016 as world number one.

“I would just like to thank everyone who supported me,” she said.  We train so hard, we are constantly getting pushed and getting the best training. Thank you everyone.”

The Male Player of the Year award went to Jordan’s Ahmad Abughaush, who delivered his country its first-ever Olympic medal in Rio – gold.
