Jones Jumps Back On Top Of Podium With Stunning Comeback

Jade Jones announced her return to taekwondo action with a stunning victory at the World Taekwondo Federation’s President’s Cup event in Athens.

The double Olympic Games gold medallist defeated Russian Ekaterina Kim 18-6 in the final of the -57kg event.

Yorkshire teenager Bradly Sinden then doubled up GB Taekwondo’s success with a superb silver medal in the -63kg event.

However, Jones again proved a show-stopper in the Greek capital on the opening day of competition

“It feels great to be back after a long time off,” said the world number one from Flint, fighting for the first time since mid-December.

“I did miss it but I have really got the hunger back now. I am really buzzing to get a gold medal in my first competition back,” added Jones, ensuring there was no embarrassing comeback crash landing after her recent appearance on the Jump.

“I’m getting ready for the World Championships now and have two months to prepare. I really want to tick that last major title off my list,” added the 24-year-old Welsh star, a semi-final winner over Turkey’s Hatice Ilgun.

Sinden, 18 from Doncaster, achieved the best result of his promising career, progressing to the final to face Mirhashem Hosseini. The reigning Asian Championship gold medallist proved too strong in the end but Sinden achieved some notable wins including a semi-final victory over Belgium’s 2015 World Champion and Rio 2016 Olympian, Jaouad Achab.

The action continues today with the appearances of reigning World Champion, Bianca Walkden, and European Championship gold medallist, Lauren Williams.
