Maddock takes Bronze in Bonn
Charlie Maddock proved that she is a force to be reckoned with, by securing her first podium of 2016 tonight (Saturday) in Germany at the World Taekwondo President’s Cup.
Spirits were high in the GB camp following yesterday’s gold for Bianca Walkden and Maddock, who was Britain’s first ever European Games winner kept Britain in the medals by defeating some tough opponents in the -53kg division.
Maddock opened against Brazil’s Semile Rigobelle where she won 2-1, followed by another win against Klaudia Tvaronaviciute (LTU) 3-1 in her second round and she then beat Greek Andriana Asprogeraka 2-1 in her third fight.
Determined to secure herself a medal, the ‘Pocket Rocket’ kept the momentum going in her Quarter Final versus Croatia’s Anamarija Petrovic, taking the match 4-0.
Once in the Semi’s, the Stoke-born fighter dominated the majority of her bout, leading 4-2 before unluckily getting caught by Zeliha Agris in the last few seconds, the Turk managing to turn the match around – winning by 5-9.
“I felt really strong throughout my matches today,” said the Manchester based athlete. “I succeeded in completing all of my targets, it’s just in the last few seconds that I made one mistake and that cost me the match.”
“It was good to get the suit back on and all of the pads after so long. We’ve got the German Open in two weeks’ time, so I can’t wait to get back on the mats again.”
“Hopefully I’ll get selected to compete-49kg at the European Championships next month too.”
