Mersey Fighter Bianca Walking Tall With Award Nomination

It is not every year that Merseyside boasts a world champion – and Bianca Walkden could make 2015 a year of double celebration.

Walkden, the gold-medal winner in the +73 kg category at the Taekwondo World Championships in Russia in May, is also a finalist for a national sportswoman of the year award.

Previous winners include Sally Gunnell, Denise Lewis, Dame Kelly Holmes, Victoria Pendleton and Jessica Ennis Hill, who is among this year’s nominees.

“I want to win it and I’ll be disappointed if I don’t,” said Bianca. “It’s the way I am about everything I’m competing in. I want to be first.”

Win or lose, those names show how far the 23-year-old from West Derby has travelled in the sport over the past dozen years.
