Junior World Championships Team Announced

12th July 2022

GB Taekwondo has today confirmed that thirteen athletes have been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2022 Junior World Championships which runs between 2nd-7th August.

The prestigious event will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria and see a range of British fighters go head-to-head with the best talent from around the globe.

It will also play a crucial role in the development of the squad and provide many with their first major event experience.

The next crop of athletes will also hope to follow in the footsteps of Olympic silver medallist, Lauren Williams, who became Junior World Champion consecutively in 2014 and 2016, along with Aaliyah Powell who took the crown in 2018 – before going on to compete as seniors in the World Class Performance Programme.

The line-up for the tournament includes the likes of Junior European bronze medallists, Owen Blunt of Ultimate Taekwondo and Neve McPhillie who is from Elite Martial Arts Academy in Scotland.

On hearing the news, Yorkshire-born Blunt said: “It’s an excellent opportunity and I’m buzzing with being chosen. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance, especially as a junior athlete.

“I was actually at a college open day when I found out and my parents were thrilled too.

“When I medalled at the European Championships, it was a big shock and I wasn’t expecting it at all. I just went in and did my best so this time, I’ll be continuing with that very same mindset.”

Kickboxer Etta Choi will be making her major event debut, “I was really happy when I found out, I was watching TV and then got an email from my Dad. I was delighted.

“I think balancing both sports is going good. I practice some Taekwondo kicks when doing kickboxing as I like to try some new stuff. It’s working quite well.”
