10th December 2018

Qualification Overview

A National Olympic Committee (NOC) can qualify a maximum of four male and four female quota places for Tokyo 2020 through the WTF Olympic Ranking with a maximum of one athlete per weight category.

The top five ranked athletes in each weight category on the WTF Olympic Ranking, after the Grand Prix Final 6th-7th December 2019, will qualify one quota place for their NOC for the Olympic Games.

If a NOC has qualified a minimum of two male and a minimum of two female athletes through the WTF Olympic Ranking, it cannot participate in a Continental Qualification Tournament.

Therefore, should Great Britain qualify less than two male quota places and less than two female quota places through the WTF Olympic Ranking, it can participate in the European Qualification Tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (location TBC)

If Great Britain were to finish at the top of The World Taekwondo Grand Slam Ranking in December 2019 after the Final Grand Slam Series of this cycle they would secure quota places at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Note that Great Britain can only enter weight categories in the 2020 European, Tokyo Olympic Qualification Tournament so as to attempt to reach the minimum of two male and/or two female categories for the Olympic Games. E.g. if Great Britain qualifies one male weight category through WTF Olympic Ranking, it can enter one male weight category in the Qualification Tournament, to try to reach the minimum of two male categories for the Olympic Games.

The top two athletes per weight category at the European Qualification Tournament will qualify quota places for their NOCs.
