Taekwondo: Charlie Maddock strikes gold as she ups bid for Olympic spot

CHARLIE Maddock showed her battling credentials to add a new gold medal to her growing collection – despite competing in a higher weight division.

Maddock is the European taekwondo champion at -49kg but took her place in the -53kg at the Israel Open and needed to come from behind three times to take the title.

The high-kicking 19-year-old gave a taste of what was to come when she came from 8-1 down in her opening bout to beat Cypriot Despina Pilavaki 13-10.

And she eventually beat 2013 world bronze medal winner and two-time European champion Floriane Liborio (France) 8-5 in the final to strike gold.
