Taekwondo: Packmoor’s Charlie Maddock Eyes Manchester Success To Round Off Superb Year
IT’S been a whirlwind two years for high-kicking teenage sensation Charlie Maddock – and she hopes she can end 2015 on a high by claiming a medal at the Manchester Grand Prix next week.
The Packmoor powerhouse has burst on to the world taekwondo scene this year, claiming a remarkable European Games gold medal in Baku in only her second major event – beating Serbia’s Tijana Bogdanovic in the -49kg category in June.
Maddock, a seven-time junior kickboxing champion, competed in her first Taekwondo World Championship a month before Baku, having only switched the disciplines two years ago.
The 19-year-old reached the quarter-finals on that occasion, losing to Wu Jingyu of China, but in a jam-packed year of action Maddock believes she has learned a lot of important lessons.
