Jacob’s On Ladder To Career Success After Debut Tournament Victory

Dereece Williams, Jacob Barnett and Hassan Haider with their medals.

Yorkshire prospect Jacob Barnett marked his first appearance since becoming a member of the GB Academy with victory at the Austrian Open in Innsbruck.

The 20-year-old was one of three GB medal winners though there was no podium placing for Luke Jones, younger brother of double Olympic champion, Jade Jones.

Barnett, a student at Leeds Beckett University, defeated Romania’s Andrei Rotaru to win the -68kg weight division on golden point.

In total, he won four fights and his performances were a boost ahead of his participation at the World University Games in August as part of Great Britain’s three-strong team.

Barnett joined the GB set-up in Manchester earlier this year as part of the latest crop of graduates from the Fighting Chance talent ID initiative.

His fellow medallists, Haider Hassan and Dereece Williams, also came through the Fighting Chance programme.

Hassan from Falkirk collected bronze at -58kg while former kick boxer Williams from Wolverhampton won bronze after losing to compatriot Barnett in the semi-finals.

Welsh prospect Jones enjoyed an encouraging start to his new career defeating Switzerland’s Anusanth Sangaran 21-5 in the -58kg weight division.

The 18-year-old from Flint then came up against Holland’s Giorgio Janmaat, six years his senior and with World and European Championship action on his CV.

Jones battled hard before losing 23-22. Janmaat went on to reach the final, knocking out Scot Hassan in the last four.

A fourth GB medal came from North East teenager, Simone Abley, who won gold in the -68kg junior event.
