Silver Success For Duo

15th September 2019

Bianca Walkden and Christian McNeish have secured silver medals at the World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Chiba.

The triple World Champion faced China’s Shuyin Zheng for the first time since the 2019 World Taekwondo Championships and narrowly lost in the +67kg Final on golden point.

Speaking on her medal, she said: “Obviously I’m never happy if I don’t win gold, but honestly it’s all a stepping stone towards the Olympics.

“It always is a good fight between us, but none of us meant for it [the rivalry] to happen, but it’s there and it’ll be there all the way to Tokyo.

“I’m not best friends [with Zheng] but I don’t dislike her, we just don’t see each other outside of events but it’s a rivalry that’s happened.

“Come Tokyo hopefully I’ll be 100% ready because that’s all that matters to me.”

Meanwhile, there was no stopping reigning European Champion, McNeish. He impressively fought off heavy competition throughout the day, most notably, former three-time World Champion, Lee Dae Hoon in the Semi-Final and eventually won against the world number one 33-26.

Next, the ex-kickboxer went head-to-head with Iran’s Mirhashem Hosseini in the -68kg Final and despite putting on a great performance came second to the Asian Games Champion, ending the match with a 20-36 score.

Elsewhere, it was a round-of-16 finish for World Champion Bradly Sinden along with fellow Brits Lutalo Muhammad, Mahama Cho, Damon Sansum and Rebecca McGowan; whilst, double European Champion, Lauren Williams finished her day in the Quarter Final stage of the tournament.

There was also an early-round exit for Junior World Champion, Jordyn Smith.
