GB fighters hit the jackpot at President’s Cup
Welsh star Lauren Williams and Peter Longobardi-Radford returned to form with golden performances at the latest President’s Cup event in America.
And with Damon Sansum also finishing the event in Las Vegas with a bronze medal, it proved a successful trip for the small Manchester trained squad.
Williams from Newport, the reigning European champion, claimed her latest title in the -67kg division.
“It was a really tough day and I fought strong opponents,” said the double Junior world champion.
“Both my semi-final and final were against Olympians which gives me great confidence going into the next Grand Prix tournament in London (October 20-22) later this month.
“Throughout the day I was a lot calmer than usual. I felt like I played my game really well and stuck to my strategies the best I could!
“I’m really looking forward to competing at the Copper Box. It’s an exciting prospect.”
Sansum, a bronze medallist at this year’s World Championship, claimed another third place at -80kg.
“I felt like I brought my main weapons back to my game and I am back on track to where I want to be.
“Moving forwards, London is around the corner where I want to put on a show for the home crowd.
“Step by step I will be improving towards my main aim which is to be consistently on top of the podium.”
Longobardi-Radford opened the year with victories in Germany, Holland and Belgium but couldn’t replicate his results at the World Championships.
However, his Vegas win in the -68kg class suggests he’s getting back to the top of his game in time for the Grand Prix at Queen Elizabeth Park from October 20-22.
