Harvey And Stamper Looking To Bring ‘A’ Game To Innsbruck

Olympians Michael Harvey and Martin Stamper return to action with points to prove at the Austrian Open in Innsbruck on Sunday.

Harvey, only 18 when he competed at the 2008 Beijing Games, and London 2012 competitor, Stamper, both missed selection for the WTF World Championships in Russia earlier this month.

And with the 2015 World Grand Prix series due to start in July, both are out to impress to force their way into contention. Stamper has won silver medals at the US and Spanish Opens in 2015 while 2012 European gold medallist, Harvey, has struggled to recapture his best form.

Team mate, Mahama Cho, is another with a point to prove. The popular heavyweight was picked for the Worlds only to suffer a second round defeat to Ivory Coast’s Firmin Zokou.

So, with the inaugural European Games taking place in Baku next month, Cho is looking for some confidence boosting victories to kick start his season.

The trio form part of a 10-strong Manchester trained squad heading for the WTF G1 tournament. Georgia Barnes is GB’s sole female competitor and will compete at -53kg having been a late call-up to the World Championship team as replacement for Nicole Huntington.

Liverpool teenager, Josh Calland, was the youngest member of the squad in Chelyabinsk. The 16-year-old from Netherley didn’t disgrace himself either despite losing 15-12 in round two against home favourite, Rusland Poiseev.

Fellow youngster, Archie Waldock, was an Austrian Open youth bronze medallist 12 months ago. He has stepped up to senior level with almost instant results since then including Bosnia Open bronze.

Tony Stephenson joins Harvey and Stamper in the -68kg event, aiming to repeat his success at the Greek Open earlier this year. The squad is completed by Ben Haines (-74kg) and Lyle Walker (+87kg).
