Martin was born and brought up in Liverpool and from a young age has always had an interest in sports.

He was first introduced to the sport at the age of 6 when his parents decided to take him along to his local club

He was instantly hooked and achieved National success, winning gold, at the 2001 British Championships before going on to claim silver at the Junior Europeans that same year.

In 2006, Martin moved to Loughborough to become part of the GB Academy and train full time.

Martin missed out on the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, but gave one of the best performances of his career when he won silver at the 2008 European Championships.

Since becoming a father in August 2010 Martin has enjoyed the best form of his career with gold medals at the US Open, German Open and British Open, silver at the French Open and bronze at the World Championships.

In 2012 Martin won bronze at the European Championships held in Manchester and booked his place to the Games, competing at -68kg.
