Maxed Out – GB Taekwondo Stars Celebrate Successful Australian Trip
30th June 2019
After a four-medal haul at the World Taekwondo President’s Cup and bronze for world champion, Matt Bush at the Oceania Para Championship, GB Taekwondo stars rounded off a successful trip Down Under at the Australian Open.
Lauren Williams added silver to her President’s Cup gold in the -67kg division enjoying a superb 32-30 semi-final win over Colombian Katherine Dumar.
Heavyweight Mahama Cho also reached another final at +87kg but like Welsh teammate, Williams, also finished with silver.
Fellow Londoner Christian McNeish enjoyed more success after a lean few months. A winner at -68kg in the President’s Cup, he finished with bronze.
The added bonus for the three Manchester trained fighters was a maximum 40 ranking points towards qualifying their respective weight divisions for next year’s Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Scot Damon Sansum reached the quarter-finals at -80kg but lost 17-11 against Germany’s Alexander Bachmann.
Welshman Bush, Britain’s first ever male world champion, came agonisingly close to improving his +75kg bronze.
He took American Evan Medell to golden point at the Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium on the Gold Coast, only to miss out on the final.
