Olympic Champion Jones Suffers World Championship Agony

Jade Jones was left frustrated and devastated after suffering quarter-final heart break at the WTF World Championships in Russia today. (Sunday)

Less than 24 hours after watching house mate, Bianca Walkden, claim gold in the +73kg final, London 2012 golden girl Jones hoped to emulate her Liverpudlian friend at -57kg.

Unbeaten in her previous six tournaments, the 22-year-old from Flint was well on course to improve on her world silver medal from 2011 as she dropped only two points in reaching the last eight.

Opposed then by Iranian wonder girl, Kimia Azizadeh Zenoorin, Jones looked in control as she led 4-1 before disaster and controversy struck.

Zenoorin quickly levelled at 4-4 before the pair traded blows until the final 30 seconds. Jones appealed for a head shot which the referees rejected leaving the scores tied at 9-9.

Seconds later she struck with a reverse to the chest just as Zenoorin countered. The electronic scoring system froze and when it quickly came back online, only the Iranian’s point had registered. With out a video appeal distraught Jones had no time to respond and went out 10-9.

“It was a really tight match but I thought I had it when I scored the spinning back kick,” explained Jones. “The scoring system crashed and when it returned, I didn’t have the points. I couldn’t understand why. I still can’t.

“She’s a tough opponent and fought well. I know I could have perhaps covered better but it’s so frustrating to see good shots not awarded points when there is so much at stake.”

Earlier, the Welsh star, who will now look to next month’s European Games in Baku for salvation, registered back to back 7-1 wins over Adrianna Martinez of Venezuela and Yu Chen of Chinese Taipei.

To complete an unhappy penultimate final day of the Championships for the British contingent, Manchurian Jordan Gayle lost his opening match 18-16 to Lorenz Chavez of the Philippines. However, the Manchester trained squad have two more medal chances tomorrow with Damon Sansum in the -80kg division and Rachelle Booth at -62kg..
