Para Trio Enjoy Cup Success in Albania

19th February 2022

GB Para Taekwondo stars Joe Lane and Amy Truesdale picked up where they left off at the end of last year by collecting their first medals of 2022.

Competing at the World Taekwondo Presidents Cup in Albania, Londoner Lane and Truesdale from Chester finished with silver medals to add to podium places at the Para Worlds last December.

Liverpool’s Beth Munro, the first-ever British Para Taekwondo fighter to win a Paralympic Games medal when taking silver at Tokyo 2020, added yet another notch to her belt. She missed out to Turkey’s Secil Er 6-3 in the semi-final which secured her a bronze in the -65kg division.

Fighting at +65kg, Truesdale opened her Cup campaign with a 25-3 win over Jelena Rasic of Serbia.

However, her bid for gold ended in a 19-10 defeat to Spaniard Dalia Santiago.

“It’s great to have made another final and achieved another silver medal,” said the former world champion.

“We have got the European Championships in Manchester in May and this tournament was great preparation.”

Lane competed at the Paralympics as an 11th-hour replacement for injured heavyweight Matt Bush.

But fighting at his natural weight, Lane achieved a career breakthrough with a bronze medal at the World Para Taekwondo Championships.

Again, competing at -80kg, he knocked out India’s Singh Maan 4-2 and followed up with a 9-7 success over Nikola Spajic of Serbia.

Lane nearly secured gold only to lose 4-3 against Uzbekistan’s Nurlan Dombayev, a bronze medallist from Tokyo 2020.

The European Championships which will take place from 19-22 May 2022, at the Manchester Regional Arena and will be the first major competition on home soil since Tokyo 2020.
