Background and origins of the club:
British Taekwondo South was established in 1981, by Master Joe Brown, and is well known to all in the sport as BTS. From then on, the club has expanded to become one of the best known Taekwondo Clubs in Great Britain producing Champion Fighter Athletes at all levels, National and International. The club originated, and is still based, on the South Coast in Hampshire however due to our continued success we now have a BTS club in the North of England.
Our development philosophy:
The BTS pathway is for all BTS athletes who wish to achieve their personal goals and dreams by representing Great Britain. Our internal development pathway allows athletes to progress from our satellite clubs into the BTS child/cadet and Elite (junior) squads.
BTS aims to produce champions in Sport Taekwondo through continued development of our athletes and coaches.
Our proudest achievements:
- Outstanding achievement that in consecutive years (2013 & 2014) the club to had 2 students selected for training full time at the National Academy in the same year.
- 9 National Champions in 2016 and 2 Commonwealth Champion’s currently train with our club.
- As January 2017 -7 BTS athletes in GB cadet and junior talent pathway.
- Unique achievement winning 2 team trophies at a single G1 tournament (Serbia Open).
- Gareth Brown, former BTS coach moved to become High Performance at GB National Academy full-time.

Our key achievements and relationships:
BTS’s success has led to new partnership with kickboxing club, Maddogs Martial Arts, Stoke-On-Trent. The partnership began in May 2016 when Joe Brown, Head Coach BTS, welcomed Dave Maddock (three times World Kickboxing Champion and Head Junior Coach for the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations for 11 years ) and a new cohort of Taekwondo athletes wishing to transition from Kickboxing into the BTS family. Since then a number of our ex-kickboxing athletes have attained National Champion status and even been selected for the GB Talent Pathway.
