World Champion Sinden Raring to Go at Chiba Grand Prix after Summer Refresh

12th September 2019

Bradly Sinden launches the last part of his bid for Olympic selection by fighting for the first time in the host country for next year’s Games.

The world champion and current world number two is one of nine GB Taekwondo athletes competing at the Chiba Grand Prix event (September 13-15).

Refreshed after a summer break Sinden is hoping to qualify a British spot at -68kg for Tokyo 2020.

And while taking nothing for granted, the 20-year-old Yorkshire born fighter is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Sinden hasn’t fought since finishing with a bronze medal at the Rome Grand Prix back in June.

“It is probably the longest break, competition to competition, I have had in a long time,” he confirmed. “So, I can’t wait to get out there.

“I have worked on a lot of different things since coming back into training and in the last few weeks I have started to see them come together.”

Sinden has also prepared for his return to competition with behind closed doors test matches against French fighters in Paris and Manchester.

“Now, I just want to put in the best performances I can over the next few events to seal Olympic qualification,” he said.

“And if I don’t stay on top of my game every time I won’t be bringing medals back. So, I am going to have to stay composed and fight like I normally do.”

Also feeling refreshed and ready for a challenge at -80kg is former World Championship silver and bronze medallist, Damon Sansum.

“I have had a good break and it’s been good to get on top of a few niggles with fighting so much. It’s also good to get mentally refreshed as well.

“But the whole team is looking sharp and in good physical condition and I am really excited to fight.

“The standard in the men’s squad is so competitive. It keeps you on your toes and exposed to that high level of training.”

Back on the mat too are 2018 European champion Christian McNeish (-68kg), double Olympic medallist Lutalo Muhamad and 2017 World silver medallist, Mahama Cho.

Three-time World champion, Bianca Walkden, heads a strong women’s squad including 2018 World Grand Slam winner, Lauren Williams.
