GB All Set to Go Down Under

27th June 2019

A small but medal-laden five-strong GB squad has flown Down Under to compete across three tournaments in three days.

The Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium on Australia’s Gold Coast is the destination for reigning European champions, Christian McNeish and Lauren Williams, former World Championship medallists, Damon Sansum and Mahama Cho plus Para World gold medallist, Matthew Bush.

All five have hopes of qualifying for next summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Welsh star Bush has fought sparingly since becoming Britain’s first ever male Para Taekwondo athlete to capture a world crown.

But he’s got a chance on Friday to now leave his mark on the Oceania Para Championships.

Twenty four hours earlier his GB teammates make their first-ever appearances at the World Taekwondo President’s Cup Oceania region event.

Indeed, none of the well-travelled quartet have previously fought in Australia. They complete their trip by contesting the Australian Open on Saturday, June 29.

President’s Cup Squad:

Male:

-68kg: Christian McNeish (Plaistow)

-80kg: Damon Sansum (Elgin)

+87kg: Mahama Cho (Stockwell)

Female:

-67kg: Lauren Williams (Blackwood, Gwent)

Oceania Para Championships Team:

+75kg: Matthew Bush
