McGowan eyes Paris 2024 after claiming superb World silver medal

High Performance Coach, Torann Maizeroi with Rebecca McGowan.

Rebecca McGowan widened her career ambitions after becoming World Championship silver medallist in Azerbaijan.

The 23-year-old Scot defeated reigning -67kg Olympic champion, Matea Jelic, on her way to the final of the -73kg weight division.

And despite a narrow final defeat to French rival, Althea Laurin, McGowan is determined to continue her upward career curve.

“It has definitely given me some confidence towards Paris 2024,” said the Dumbarton fighter whose medal followed on from boyfriend  Bradly Sinden’s gold 24 hours earlier.

“It keeps proving to me and others that I have what it takes to be among the best.

“For now, I am going home to see all my friends and family and celebrate.

“I just took all my fights a minute at a time, played a clinical game and it worked well.

“It was a tough fight (against Jelic) and I was glad to get through it. Again, I just took it minute by minute, action by action, and thankfully it got me through.”

European champion Laurin, a +67kg bronze medallist at Tokyo 2020, won two close opening rounds to deny McGowan her maiden senior world title.

However, the Brit, who won World bronze in Mexico last year, showed her class by beating Croatian star Jelic 2-0 in the semi-finals.
