Sharissa is on top of world after elevation to GB Taekwondo’s WCP programme

21st November 2019

Double European Junior Championship medallist, Sharissa Gannaway is the latest addition to GB Taekwondo’s World Class Performance Programme.

The Southampton born youngster of BTS also represented Team GB at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

“It feels amazing to be selected for the full-time Academy,” said the 17-year-old.

“I know it is going to be tough but I am more than excited for the journey ahead.

“My parents were very happy for me and felt that coming off the back of junior Europeans it is a great way to end the year.

“I used to do a lot of different things sports-wise and it got to a point where I didn’t do any.

“So, my dad suggested taekwondo just to keep active and learn a form of self-defence.

“It took me a long time to understand the sport but after winning my first competition I couldn’t get rid of the desire to keep winning.

“With only competing in the sport for four years I feel that I have achieved so much in such little time.

“Going to the Youth Olympics and having that experience alongside gaining a silver medal at the junior Europeans this year have to be the highlights of my career so far.”

GB Taekwondo performance director, Gary Hall, said: “I am delighted to confirm that Sharissa has accepted an offer to join the GB Academy.

“She has been a member of the development squad for the past three years.

“And I would like to say a big ‘well done’ to the development team who have done a great job enhancing her development during her time on the programme.”
