Cho makes it Fearsome Five for Tokyo

19th December 2019

This week’s Grand Slam Champions Series in Wuxi (China) marks the end of the 4-year Tokyo Olympic qualification campaign.

Mahama Cho will be bringing home silver after dominating in the +80kg weight division and has impressively beat the reigning Olympic Champion, Radik Isaev of Azerbaijan in the Quarter Final to secure a fifth Olympic quota place for the GB team.

GB Taekwondo now has 5 weight categories qualified (F -57kg, -67kg +67kg: M -68kg, +80kg) and will take their biggest ever team to Tokyo next year.

GB Taekwondo’s Performance Director, Gary Hall said: “Not only am I delighted with securing five Olympic spots, but also the manner of performances along the way. Two of our athletes are ranked number one in the world and another two are ranked second.

“We have three reigning World Champions. Selection will take place in May 2020 and I’m confident we will be taking our best-ever team to an Olympics.  We have also secured one Paralympic spot and are chasing two more.  With qualifications now secured early, we can focus on best preparing the team in 2020.

“I’d like to thank all the athletes who have fought so strong and skilfully over and over again throughout the campaign, the coaching team for their fortitude, resilience and calmness in battle and to a brilliant GB Taekwondo support and business who continually seek for greater progress.”
