Fantastic Haul in the French Capital

28th November 2022

Development athlete, Phoenix Goodman has led the pack at the French Open tonight, where a total of eleven medals have been won by GB’s national squad.

The Southampton-born fighter has quickly claimed gold in the French capital by beating South Korea’s Sua Park in the -46kg final, ending the match with a score of 2-1.

Upon her route to the intense final, there was also a GB face-off where Goodman faced her peer, Etta Choi, in the semi-final. Kickboxer Choi eventually bowed out resulting in her claiming a bronze medal.

Elsewhere it was superb silver for teammates, Catherine Makanjuola and Morgan Curtis. Their wins follow being selected to compete at the Grand Prix on home soil, which took place last month.

There was a podium place too for Aaliyah Powell, who recently secured her second World Championships medal in Guadalajara. Just three years earlier, the teenager took bronze during her GCSE exams – making her the youngest British athlete to achieve the accolade.

The momentum continued on day two of the tournament by GB’s Development Team. Lily Kingsley, Gurdit Denis Singh-Digwa and Teigan Smith struck gold whilst Umaymah Mohamed gained silver. Third place medals were also taken by Lola Williams and Emily Wills.
