Last Hit Out Before Manchester Grand Prix For GB Trio

They may already have been selected for next week’s World Taekwondo Federation World Grand Prix in Manchester but three members of the GB hit squad will be in competition mode this Sunday.

Heavyweight Mahama Cho plus teenagers Josh Calland and Max Cater will warm-up for their forthcoming Grand Prix battles at the Belgrade Open in Serbia.

The trio are joined by recent Israel Open bronze medallist, Ben Haines, who narrowly missed selection for the WGP show down at Manchester’s Regional Arena from October 16-18.

Cho, Great Britain’s first ever Grand Prix champion in December 2013, is on a mission to qualify the +80kg weight division for next summer’s Rio Olympic Games.

And with valuable ranking points available in the Serbian capital, the 26-year-old ‘Stockwell Slayer’ gets a chance to boost his total before resuming a 2015 Grand Prix campaign that brought bronze in Moscow back in August.

Southampton starlet Cater, who celebrated his 18th birthday last month, is no stranger to the Belgrade Open, claiming a youth bronze medal back in 2013.

He also enjoyed a more recent trip to the Balkans, claiming gold at the Bosnia Open to go with this year’s Swiss Open title and Turkish Open bronze.

Liverpudlian Calland has also impressed this year and enhanced his reputation with medal winning displays in Greece, Holland and Austria.

The duo are in action at -58kg while Haines, 21, from Portsmouth fights at -74kg looking to build on encouraging results in Australia and Israel.

*To watch Cho, Cater and Calland plus Olympic champion Jade Jones, World Championship gold medallist, Bianca Walkden, and Britain’s other top stars fighting on home territory for the last time before next year’s Olympics, take in the action at Manchester’s edition of the World Taekwondo Grand Prix from October 16-18.
