Manchester Grand Prix Final: Day 2 wrap-up

Day 2 of the Manchester Grand Prix Final has brought shock results for GB Taekwondo but still resulted in 2 qualification spots for the 2024 Paris Olympics and a bronze medal for youngster Aailyah Powell.

The day started strong with two-time Olympic champion Jade Jones and up and coming star Aailyah Powell both winning their round of 16 fight resulting in the two of them being drawn against each other for the Quarter-Finals.

The Quarter-Finals went down to the final second, ending in a draw between the two GB athletes and crowning Aaliyah winner due a point scoring default.

Aailyah then took on Faith Dillon from USA in the Semi-Finals which unfortunately led to a defeat for GB. Due to her opponent withdrawing from the bronze medal fight, she was automatically awarded the medal in front of a roaring home crowd.

World Number One in the -68kg category Bradley Sinden was shockingly knocked out in the Quarter-Finals by Zaid Alhalwani from Jordan. Phoenix Goodman made her senior competition debut and fought heroically but it wasn’t quite enough to make it through, along with Mo Nour who was also knocked out in the round of 16.
