World Champion Sinden spearheads GB Taekwondo European Games squad

1st June 2023

New world champion Bradly Sinden is one of 12 GB Taekwondo fighters named as part of Team GB’s squad for the European Games in Poland (June 21 to July 2).

Indeed, 10 of the Manchester-trained team, including new world silver medallist, Rebecca McGowan, competing at the current World Championships in Azerbaijan, will also be participating in Krakow Malopolska.

The two additions are Jodie McKew who won a Games qualifier to book her place and Development athlete, Zack Sarsoza.

The European Games have a special connection with GB Taekwondo. The first edition of the multi-sport event was staged in 2015 when again hosted by Azerbaijani capital, Baku.

Three GB fighters secured medals including Charlie Maddock who became Team GB’s first-ever female European Games gold medallist, and double Olympic champion, Jade Jones who also won gold.

Jones looks to regain her title in Poland and bounce back from the World Championships where she reached the quarter-finals at -57kg.

Team GB have selected 178 athletes to compete across 18 Olympic disciplines in the 2023 European Games.

Qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be on the line for most disciplines with taekwondo athletes among those competing for all-important ranking points for Paris 2024 qualification.

The third edition of the European Games will see around 7,000 athletes from 48 European nations compete across a 12-day sporting programme.

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Wednesday, June 21 with the Closing Ceremony taking place on Sunday, July 2.
