Muhammad Secures Medal
Lutalo Muhammad has won his Semi-Final against Milad Beigi Harchegani of Azerbaijan 12-7.
With gold on his mind, the 25-year-old carefully controlled his attack and scored a head-shot within the first round.
Once into the second, his Azerbaijani opponent attempted to even the score, however, his head-kick was quickly contested and the round ended 5-1.
Muhammad managed to seal his pledge for gold by landing a further 2 head-kicks taking the score to 12-7 in the third and final round.
On making it into the Final, Muhammad said: “It is an incredible feeling but I need to tone it down. It was a very exciting time out there, the fact of the matter is that I have had three fights and I have won all three and I have got one more to become Olympic champion.
“I have got to stay focussed, I have got one more fight for the gold medal. It has been te goal for the past 16 years, it is tremendous to make it here, I am at the final stage and intend to go get it.
“It [the semi-final] was my toughest fight. We identified that he was one of the favourites coming in, outside of myself of course, it was a shame that we met in the semi-final. I think that was a final really.
“But I can’t get too bogged down with the emotions, there is another guy who is going to come on and try and take this gold away from me and I will not let him have it.”
The Walthamstow warrior will now face Cheick Sallah Cisse (CIV) at 2.15am in the -80kg Final.
