Euro Victory is just the Job for Olympic Reserve Rebecca

21st June 2021

Rebecca McGowan showed star quality by striking gold at the Multi European Games hosted in Bulgaria.

The talented Scot, who celebrated her 21st birthday last month, will be a reserve for next month’s sporting spectacle in Japan.

There must be something in the Balkan air that certainly appeals to McGowan as she also struck European Championship gold just two months earlier.

She fought four times in the -73kg weight division culminating in a 21-4 success over France’s former junior world championship silver medallist, Estelle Vander-Zwalm.

“It is always great to come away with a gold medal,” said McGowan.

“I went in with the same plan, same target and same aim as I always do and it paid off.”

The tournament was a learning curve for some of the younger members of the squad who will hope to be in the mix for selection for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Chloe Roberts reached the quarter-finals at -62kg while 2019 World Championship bronze medallist, Aaliyah Powell, progressed to the last 16 at -57kg only to lose 9-8 against Anisiia Chelokhsaeva.

Maddison Moore was on the cusp of the last four at -49kg but went down 10-9 to Croatia’s Bruna Duvancic.

Mohammed Nour lost to Ali Aliev in the last eight at -58kg while another beaten quarter-finalists was heavyweight Caden Cunningham undone by Spain’s Daniel Ros Gomez.

Liverpool’s Josh Calland suffered a 13-4 defeat to Stepan Steplov in the -80kg competition.
